Hanoi is a bustling city with a beautiful blend of old and new throughout everyday life. The narrow streets of the Old Quarter are filled with food stands and street vendors to satisfy every notion you’ve ever had about the “real Vietnam”.

The quality, flavour and price of the food is up there with the best in Vietnam and the people are friendly and welcoming to travellers. Hanoi has all the culture, cuisine, nightlife and atmosphere that you would expect from a centuries-old capital city.

Flipside Hostel is a modern, new and innovative accommodation choice set in the heart of the Old Quarter. This place is awesome on so many levels. Everything is a step above what you would expect from a typical backpackers hostel. Where else do you find spacious and inviting double beds in a dorm? Or how about an enormous bathtub on the private balcony of your double room? At Flipside Hostel, THAT’S where!
Boasting some of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept in and beautiful large rooms, Flipside offers facilities and services to please everyone. From backpackers to flashpackers, to couples wanting the atmosphere of a hostel with the privacy and comfort of a hotel, all travellers are catered for here.

There is a quadruple room for groups of friends, a double room with private bathtub on the balcony for flashpackers or couples and there are a variety of dormitories for the everyday backpacker.

All dorm beds come with lockable storage, individual reading lights and a personal charge station. All rooms are air-conditioned and have fast, reliable Wi-Fi on every floor! The shared bathrooms are spotlessly clean with hot showers and awesome water pressure.

Of course, no hostel would be complete without a wicked little place to kick back and enjoy a beer at the end of a long day exploring. Well, Flipside has you covered there too! The rooftop bar is funky, chilled and the perfect place to enjoy a cool drink or watch the sunset. There aren’t too many places in Hanoi where you can experience the city from above, but this bar is one of them!

Breakfast is included in all room rates and with an offer of delicious pancakes or eggs on toast, you can head out for the day with a full stomach, ready to enjoy the city. The bar also offers a great drinks menu with plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic choices all at great prices. Of course the daily Happy Hour right on sunset doesn’t hurt either!
Flipside also offer a range of tours and services such as their new motorbike journey into the far north of the country or their group dinners to the local snake village. The staff are friendly and welcoming and offer plenty of information such as museum opening hours, restaurant suggestions and where to find the best nightlife.

As if all of this wasn’t enough to convince you to stay here, Flipside is also giving back to the local communities in northern Vietnam by practicing responsible tourism! In the near future, a percentage of all room costs will be donated to a village in the Dong Van region to pay for books and school supplies for the local children. Comfort, atmosphere and good ethics… we like what you’re doing Flipside!

If you’re willing to spend a few extra dollars for a good night sleep but still want the atmosphere of a hostel and the opportunity to meet other travellers, then Flipside is perfect for you.

Treehouse Bungalows Review | Koh Rong | Cambodia

Date of Stay: August 2015

Room Type: Beach Front Bungalow

Price Per Room: $30 USD Per Night
Picture
Koh Rong was one of the greatest surprises we have had so far in over 12 months of travelling. Arriving by boat from Sihanoukville, we weren’t sure whether Koh Rong would be an unspoilt paradise or an unbearable mess of drunken backpackers. Lucky for us, it was the first – an unspoilt paradise of white sand beaches, turquoise waters and jungle interior just waiting to be explored!

Koh Rong is roughly 25km off the south coast of Cambodia and is a 45 minute boat trip from the popular holiday town of Sihanoukville.
For more info on Koh Rong Island, click here to read our Travel Guide to Koh Rong!
As soon as we arrived, we knew exactly what we were looking for:  A private beachfront bungalow, far enough away from the centre of town to avoid the late night parties yet within walking distance of the main facilities. We knew what we wanted and we found it all at the fantastic Treehouse Bungalows.

f you didn’t know about Treehouse Bungalows, there is a good chance you would miss it and trust me.... you don't want to miss this place!
Picture
Set on it’s own private beach just around a small headland from the main Touch Beach, Treehouse Bungalows offers complete privacy from all the action of the main beach, while still being within a 10 minute walk from the centre of town. The sign for Tree House Bungalows is on the far northern end of Touch Beach and it doesn’t take long once you follow the damp and tree covered path, to suddenly emerge in front of a beautiful wooden bungalow within metres of the cool blue ocean!

We fell in love with this place before we had even reached the restaurant, which also doubles as reception. While the bungalows are more expensive than our usual accommodation budget, we decided that staying at Treehouse Bungalows would really make our time on Koh Rong so much more relaxing and seeing it offered everything we wanted in one place, we decided to splurge!
Picture
The new wooden bungalows are all spacious and airy, with large glass doors opening directly onto your private balcony. All bungalows come with private (cold water) bathroom, a fan and a large, comfortable bed with a VERY necessary mosquito net!

The beach in front of Treehouse Bungalows is absolutely stunning. While it is a relatively small beach, we rarely had to share it with other travellers during our stay! Thanks to the isolated location off the main stretch of sand, we actually rarely saw anyone at all unless we went in to town for a meal or an afternoon beer!
The onsite restaurant serves up a variety of Kmher and Western dishes and prides itself on having a real pizza oven. (Having said that, we ordered pizza during our stay and it was quite a let down, however the other food was fantastic!). Meals range from $3 - $10, making it one of the more expensive dining choices on the island, however it’s a nice alternative to the hustle and bustle of town if you want a quiet, relaxing night on your private beach!
Treehouse Bungalows is currently undergoing a lot of construction in the hope of being complete in time for the high season. This construction will see the number of beachfront bungalows double, as well as four new treehouses set 6 metres above the ground and all with uninterrupted ocean views all the way to Sihanoukville on a clear day!

Treehouse Bungalows was gorgeous during our stay, but I am confident that it will only improve in the next few months, making it a top competitor for the best accommodation within a short walk of town!

Siem Reap Rooms Review | Siem Reap | Cambodia

Date of Stay: August 2015

Room Type: Standard Double Room

Price Per Room: $20 USD Per Night
Picture
Many travellers visit Siem Reap for one main reason – to visit the alluring and mesmerizing, Angkor Wat. I first visited Angkor Wat eight years ago, and in my opinion, this magnificent place and the surrounding temples are only getting better with age!

Siem Reap itself is also one of the liveliest cities in South East Asia with a great nightlife, wonderful cuisines and enough markets to satisfy any shop-aholic!
Walking into the foyer at Siem Reap Rooms, we were greeted by a charming entry with high ceilings surrounded by wood carved walls, and a grand wooden staircase leading to the rooms.

The hotel offers 15 rooms in basic, superior and deluxe standards, all of which include air-conditioning, TV, private bathroom and reliable Wi-Fi. The rooms are spacious, well furnished and most importantly, spotlessly clean.
Picture
For those wanting something a bit more special, there is even a Deluxe Rooftop Suite, with a sitting area and separate bedroom making it the largest room in the hotel. It’s also the only room on the rooftop, giving the lucky guests complete privacy!
Picture
A wonderful and unexpected surprise is the rooftop deck. Complete with plunge pool, sun deck and a common sitting area with flat screen TV, this peaceful area is a great place to just relax by the pool or read a book after a long day touring the temples or exploring Siem Reap.

The hotel has an excellent breakfast menu with a variety of western favourites, coffee, tea and fresh shakes and there are soft drinks, water or beer available for purchase all day.
The staff at Siem Reap Rooms were available morning, noon and night and all speak perfect English. The hotel offers a booking service for a variety of entertainment options in town as well as bus tickets, tuk tuk service and laundry. The hotel is roughly 10 minutes walk from town on a quiet street however there was always a tuk tuk driver out the front, ready to offer his services.

Siem Reap Rooms offers everything you need for a short or long stay in Siem Reap which is perfect for a city where you just might find yourself staying longer than planned!

Laughing Gecko Bungalows Review | Ao Nang | Thailand

3/2/2015

Date of Stay:  January and February 2015

Room Type: Double bungalow with private bathroom

Price per night: 400 Thai Baht
Picture
Finding reasonably priced accommodation in Ao Nang during peak season was much more difficult than I originally anticipated. Many dorm beds were more expensive than we would normally pay for a private room and even then they were on the outskirts of town and quite far from the beach. Finding Laughing Gecko Bungalows was an absolute game changer to my time in Ao Nang and after a brief two night stay, I was disappointed I hadn't booked in for longer. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that within weeks I was back to stay again!

Laughing Gecko is located one street back from the Northern end of Ao Nang, on Nopparathara Beach where there is much less hustle and bustle and more peace and serenity than busy Ao Nang Beach. While the beachfront road is still lined with shops, restaurants, bars and street food vendors, there are less tourists and considering it was peak season, the beach was relatively peaceful most days. To walk into the main centre of shopping and nightlife in Ao Nang takes approximately 15 minutes and is a pleasant stroll along the beach most of the way.

The property itself is modest and rustic and run by a lovely Thai man, Nui. Nui is a perfect host and was always there to greet me with a smile. I booked my bungalow by emailing Nui via the Laughing Gecko website (www.laughinggeckobungalows.com).  He was quick to respond to my emails within a day giving me the peace of mind that my accommodation was booked and I wouldn't be left looking for a place to stay.

I stayed in a double bungalow with private bathroom and it was spotlessly clean, spacious and very homey. The bungalow has power, a small fan and a large, comfortable bed as well as a set of shelves, which can be nice to be able to unpack some belongings rather than always living out of a bag. The bathroom was very simple with only a squat toilet and cold water shower, but with the consistently warm weather in Ao Nang I would be surprised if anyone ever wanted a hot water shower anyway!

While there are plenty of mosquitos around the property, the huge box mosquito net covering the entire bed made for a peaceful sleep every night. There is a common area with tables and chairs and even a separate room with a pool table and dart board. Wi-Fi is available in both the common area and the bungalows and generally worked very well.
In the common area, there is also a fridge with cold drinks, beer and water all at very reasonable prices. While Laughing Gecko certainly isn’t a party hostel, the atmosphere was awesome, friendly and relaxed while still being close enough to plenty of bars and pubs if your quiet drinks in the common area, turn into a night out on the town.

Laughing Gecko also offers a nightly communal buffet dinner and the one while I was there was delicious. The food was great tasting, home-cooked Thai food and was a good opportunity to meet other people and have a casual drink. If you're lucky enough, Nui might also whip out the guitar for some excellent live music!

I couldn’t have been any happier with my choice of accommodation in Ao Nang and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet of this property while still being in close proximity to all that Ao Nang has to offer.
