BEER'S HOUSE
Beer’s House is a small family run business with prime location on Lamai Beach. Lamai Beach is a calm swimming beach and the northern end where Beer’s House is located is perfect for those wanting to get away from the hoards of people in the middle of town. To walk into Lamai town takes around 15 minutes and you can either walk directly down the beach or take the road if you want to do some shopping or stop for a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the area.
The accommodation at Beer’s House, ranges from 2-4 person bungalows with private bathrooms to budget accommodation with shared bathroom. As this was just a short stay for me and I didn’t plan on spending much time in the room, I chose the budget room. It was clean, very basic and came with a small fan above the bed.

When I first inspected the room prior to booking in, it all looked as stated – clean, simple and practical for a short stay. Unfortunately the things that mattered most were the ones that didn’t immediately stand out. As soon as I sat on my bed, I struggled to find a place that wasn’t lumpy or rock hard. The mattress was terrible and left me struggling for a comfortable position even though I had an entire double bed to myself. On the upside, the fan kept the room cool, although being in a shady area behind the bungalows means these rooms don’t get particularly hot anyway.
The two biggest negatives for me, both made for a pretty poor sleep during my stay at Beer’s House. First of all, there is no sheet, blanket or doona provided in the basic rooms. This isn’t a huge problem because the weather is generally warm, as are the nights however I like to be covered at night and ended up sleeping with my sarong thrown over me. Secondly, the mosquitos! While the windows have fly screen on them, there is no mosquito net inside the room and I ended up being eaten alive every night I stayed. I don’t even know how they got in the room, but once there was even just one mosquito in there, my sleep was ruined. |
The bathroom is simple with both a manual flush toilet (ie. Bucket of water thrown down the toilet) and a simple squat toilet, while the shower is nice and big however there is only one for the seven shared rooms.
I love the atmosphere here because while in some ways there was none, that was what made it all the better! Each night there would be a few guests sitting around enjoying a meal or a beer but it is the peaceful and quiet location with views to die for that makes this outdoor area so wonderful. This isn't the place to come for loud music or parties, but is great to read a book, write or simply lap up the sunshine.
The owners and staff are all friendly and willing to discount their room prices for longer stays which would be great if you chose to stay in the beach bungalows. I don’t have photos of the interior of the bungalows but from what I saw, they were definitely a step up from the budget room I stayed in. |
Overall, if you were travelling with a group or even just a couple who wanted prime position on a beautiful quiet beach, I would definitely recommend Beer’s House for their beach bungalows. As for the budget rooms, while the location was perfect and it was all fine on the surface, unless you are one of those people who doesn’t mind a hard lumpy mattress (do those people even exist??) or don’t get bitten by mosquitos, I would probably avoid these rooms.
