MAM HOSTEL
Mam Hostel was the perfect choice for our stay in Patong Beach over New Years Eve. First and foremost, this place is NOT a hostel. It is most definitely a hotel. All rooms are private with ensuite, cable TV and air conditioning.
Mam Hostel is only a short 10 minute walk to the beach and around 20 minutes from the famous Bangla Road and Jungceylon Shopping Centre. While it is further than many other hotels and resorts, it is the best location within this price range and is surrounded by restaurants, pubs and convenience stores. Being New Years Eve, we paid absolute premiuim, however during quieter seasons, the prices can be as low as half of what we paid.
The room is clean and has all the amenities you would expect from a mid range hotel and yet for the price of a hostel. The air conditioning kept us cool at night, the room was very spacious and the bathroom is large and very clean with a rare sight for backpackers like us…. Provided toiletries! Daily servicing of the room was also a nice surprise along with complimentary bottled water daily.

The reception area downstairs is very inviting with a small sitting area with a TV, some books and plenty of brochures and information on the local area. The staff were lovely and although their English was not perfect, they were always happy to help and even allowed us to change rooms when our air conditioning was not working properly. Other than the staff, we barely saw another person during our stay here, but as mentioned, this is not actually a “hostel” so expect the social atmosphere of any normal hotel. If you want to meet people, go to one of the thousands of bars in Phuket!
There is a very small menu (maybe 5 options) at reception, however we didn’t eat in the hostel as there are so many good restaurants, street vendors and pubs within close proximity. |

We stayed on the fourth floor and other than providing great exercise seeing there is no elevator, we were pleasantly surprised that the wifi connection made it up to here. Apparently it doesn’t work in all rooms, however we were lucky enough that our connection was medium speed and consistent.
Overall, Mam Hostel (but I think we all know by now that it’s actually more of a HOTEL) exceeded our expectations and was an excellent value room during this peak season on Phuket’s most popular beach. If you have the opportunity to snatch up a bargain during low season, you’ll be laughing and even if you pay the maximum, as we did, you wont be disappointed!
