CASA DE ARENA
Huacachina | Peru
Huacachina is an oasis amongst the desert sands of Peru. No seriously... It is an actual oasis featured on the back of the 50 Sole note and some 300km south of Lima!
To get to Huacachina, you can take a bus 4-5 hours from Lima to Ica and then it's a short 10 minute taxi ride from Ica to Huacachina.
We chose to stay at Casa De Arena on the Main Street as you drive into town and literally at the foot of the main sand dune in town. In fact you can start the steep ascent directly behind the hostel if you're keen on a good work out!

Huacachina itself is really only one or two streets and the whole town in centred around the Oasis. While the oasis is beautiful, the murky green water makes it less inviting for a swim but still perfect to chill out under a palm tree and read a book.
Casa De Arena has a variety of rooms to suit most travelers. There are two 10-bed dorms, quadruple rooms, triple rooms and double rooms all with private bathroom. We chose a double room and were given a large, clean room with a comfortable bed and good Wi-Fi in the room. There's also a great shared balcony overlooking the pool outside most rooms. The guesthouse even has an inviting pool complete with a cool little pool-side bar and a restaurant however the restaurant only served breakfast during our stay. |
The staff were friendly and even offer a discount on sand buggy tours if you stay multiple nights at the hostel.
The sand buggy tour was incredible but at the same time also death defying! There was more than one moment where I thought we might actually die! The sand buggy tours also offer sand boarding, which is definitely worth a try if you've never done it before.
Compared to other budget options in town, we found Casa De Arena had all we needed during our stay with a good atmosphere, great pool and yet was big enough to offer us some privacy to just chill during the heat of the day.
