There are only three places in the entire world where Mountain Gorillas can be tracked through the jungle and witnessed in their wild, natural habitat. One of these is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in South Western Uganda.
Bwindi Backpackers Lodge is located on the border of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest which is roughly 30km from the small town of Kisoro or 70km from the slightly larger trade centre of Kabale. Getting to the lodge from either town is all a part of the adventure! The roads are rough and bumpy and only accessible by self-drive or private transfer as no public transport services this remote area. Visitors should bear this in mind when budgeting for your stay at Bwindi Backpackers Lodge as this can severely impact the cost of your stay, with transfers costing up to USD $50 one way.

This unique lodge is the original and to this day, the only, accommodation in the region catering for budget to mid-range travellers. Located across a valley from the National Park, Bwindi Backpacker Lodge has million-dollar views of this incredible part of Uganda. In the morning the sun slowly rises behind the thick jungle-clad mountains and in the evening, the sky glows pink as misty clouds form and weave their way around the lodge and the contours of the mountains. It is truly a sight to behold!
Bwindi Backpackers Lodge offers dormitory rooms, private rooms with or without bathrooms and cottages with multiple bedrooms suitable for families or groups. All of the rooms are powered by solar energy and in the evening, a generator is used to power common areas so that Wi-Fi is accessible and important electronics such as cameras can be charged. |
Hot water for showering is available upon request, however as with all amenities, this is a remote lodge and certain facilities may or may not be available depending on the weather, season and road conditions.
The rooms are built with local materials giving them a rustic African atmosphere. All self-contained and cottage rooms have a small verandah, which is a great little spot to relax after a long day tracking Gorillas or exploring the surrounds.
The lodge can be booked on a room-only, half board or full board basis. Half board provides two meals a day, while full board provides guests with a delicious breakfast, lunch and three-course dinner daily! The delicious meals prepared by the staff at Bwindi Backpackers Lodge, cater to a variety of tastes and cuisines and the chefs can also prepare meals for specific dietary requirements upon request. As one further step towards sustainability, a selection of herbs and vegetables are grown organically on the property for use in the meals prepared by the Bwindi Backpacker Lodge chefs.

A bar is also available with a small selection of beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks, all at very reasonable prices considering the remote location.
During our stay, Bwindi Backpacker Lodge introduced their brand new coffee machine. Thanks to this machine, freshly ground coffee is now being expertly brewed into cappuccinos, lattes, macchiato and more, which is a first for the entire area! Guests from any of the surrounding lodges are welcome to visit Bwindi Backpackers, sit in the restaurant area and enjoy the incredible views while indulging in a high quality, barista-made coffee! |
The staff at Bwindi Backpacker Lodge not only organize the highly coveted Gorilla Tracking Permits for their guests, but also offer a large range of tours and activities in the surrounding area. Guests can take a guided trek through the property searching for camouflaged three-horned chameleons or visit the unique Batwa Tribe where the pygmy people still live traditional lives in the forest without any modern conveniences. There are enough activities at Bwindi Backpacker Lodge to keep guests busy anywhere from a short two-day visit up to one week!
