The main benefit of Park Life Hostel is easily its location. The hostel is in an old colonial building and located directly on the main Plaza in Popayan. Next door to Park Life is a stunning cathedral and right outside the front door you are greeted by all the buzz and atmosphere of day-to-day life in Popayan.
Popayan is known as the White City and has been UNESCO World Heritage listed for its significance to Gastronomy and religious festivals in Colombia.
Park Life is run by a group of young expats and has all the facilities you would want from a good hostel. There are plenty of areas where you can chill and read a book, use the free Wi-Fi or watch a movie from the extensive DVD library. My favourite area was the rooftop area/attic accessed by an old school spiral staircase. Once at the top you had to duck your head to get to a cute little rooftop room complete with bean bags a TV and DVD player. The view over the cathedral next door was also a huge bonus!

There is a range of accommodation and room options in Park Life including dormitories, private rooms with ensuite and private rooms with shared bathroom. Our bedroom “Room with a view”, was quite simply stunning. We chose the large corner room that had incredible views over the main plaza from the huge colonial style windows. The bed was big, warm and comfortable and the room was furnished more like a hotel than a hostel.
The hostel had a large, clean kitchen with all the necessary appliances as well as two big fridges and a small dining area. The communal bathrooms were clean and all had hot showers however, while it wasn’t a problem during our stay I did wonder if there were enough bathrooms for everyone during peak times. |

Popayan is a much larger town that it first appears, however being in the main plaza means that you are within walking distance to all main sights, restaurants and markets and anything that is a bit further out of town - such as the bus terminal - can be reached by a taxi from across the road.
The hostel has a nice homely feel to it and while it isn’t much of a party place, there was a nice friendly atmosphere amongst travellers and plenty of areas of the hostel in which to meet other people.
