Flying into a new country can always be a little bit confronting and scary, so when we flew into Colombo at 10pm and saw a friendly face from Colombo Beach Hostel waiting to collect us, we couldn’t have felt more comfortable and welcomed! This service is offered for a very reasonable price and the reassurance of knowing you have transport to your accommodation when you arrive, is comforting and worthwhile.
Colombo Beach Hostel is roughly 13km south of the city centre in the beachside suburb of Mount Lavinia. There are multiple ways to get between Mount Lavinia and Colombo, from the beautiful train ride that runs along the coast to the local buses or tuk-tuks, all are cheap and take roughly half an hour depending on traffic.

Mount Lavinia is a laid back beachside town with some excellent little bars and restaurants along the beach where you can enjoy the sunset, a cold beer and great local food. Being located in Mount Lavinia, Colombo Beach Hostel offers all the conveniences of being close to Colombo while avoiding the traffic and bustle of the city. The hostel offers double rooms, mixed dormitories, a male dorm and a female dorm, all at reasonable prices and with great facilities. All rooms have a fan which is a necessity in the muggy Colombo weather, and the dormitories come with secure lockers for any valuables. |
The private double rooms are spacious with high ceilings and ample space to store your belongings. The bed also has a large mosquito net however we did not feel the need to use it during our stay and were not bothered at all by insects or mosquitos. The private and shared bathrooms are clean and modern with polished concrete floors and all have cold water showers. The common area on the rooftop of the hostel is a great little place to relax and enjoy the sea breeze coming off the ocean, which is an easy 2 minute walk away. There is a communal kitchen, offering complimentary tea and coffee, a fridge and water purifier and some cool little tables and chairs to while away the afternoon with a book. |
Colombo Beach Hostel attracts an older, more mature crowd of travellers all looking to meet other travellers and compare travel tales and tips. The hostel has a chilled vibe and the friendly staff are happy to help with directions to the local laundromat, restaurant suggestions or times and options for public transport.
The beach is a 2 minute walk, the train station a 15 minute walk and right next door is a wonderful little café offering cheap local and western meals throughout the day. Colombo Beach Hostel is a great alternative to staying in Colombo city, and is a good place to meet fellow travellers from all over the world and be in the perfect location to catch a beautiful sunset over the ocean.
